Was informed today by my boss that someone applied for unemployment benefits in my name just a few days ago (the unemployment office sent my work a letter to confirm it). Had my SS number right, pay was close but not right. Call the Michigan unemployment office to report the fraud and the automated message tells me the expected wait time is greater than 3 hours.....
Just really hoping I can get them to give me the address of where the checks were going to.

Send IRS a 14039 - tax refund might be “gone” too. Plus they give you a PIN to file your taxes with going forward which changes every year.
Call and inform bank, all CC companies, any loans, etc.
Pull your credit for all 3 agencies and check for weird stuff
Lock your credit - through TransUnion or similar ~$17.95/month. You will get notice and can view all Equifax, Experian, and TU credit pulls. Keep this going for at least 1yr post ID theft.

Sorry to hear about this but luckily it was in a way that you were able to find out. Many people don’t even realize someone has their identity until they run their credit and find out after tons of damage has already been done.

Yes RicoRich has it right. The fact you haven’t filed your taxes yet makes you a target for tax theft. Generally act ASAP as the quicker you lock it down, the less damage can be done. Michigan unemployment offices might have a faster way to get in contact on the web or a special fraud line.

I called their fraud dept, it’s literally an answering machine where you leave your info and they’ll call you back. Great system huh?
